Low Carbon Steel

Low carbon steel.JPG

Almost all transformation from δ iron to γ iron for low carbon steel proceeds in the solidus phase.

Shrinkage of billet is directly influenced by shrinkage due to transformation.

This results in uneven shell surface and delayed shell formation because of less contact of shell and mould wall as shown in the figure.

Middle Carbon Steel

Middle Carbon Steel.JPG

Transformation for middle and high carbon steel proceeds in mixture of liquidus and solidus phase.

Shrinkage of transformation is absorbed in liquidus phase.

The resultant shell is thus thicker and sticking may occur due to larger friction between billet shell and mould wall.
